The SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock is the latest in ignition interlock technology from Smart Start, Inc. It was developed to make installation, use and monitoring easier with a less-expensive and more discrete device. The SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock has been designed to work with our patented Photo ID module and make use of the device which is easier for you to use.
Smart Start’s Photo ID module is approximately one cubic inch and is mounted on the inside of the driver’s side window about halfway up from the dash. It records a picture of the user at the time of each breath test so Smart Start can see who takes each test and prevents the user from tampering with the camera. After each breath test, the photo is stored along with the date, time and location of each test to sync with the SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock information log. The SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock will effectively abort the test and prevent the user from starting their car if any tampering is detected from the device or the camera.
The SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock goes a step further to provide GPS information to Smart Start and monitoring authorities. This enables them to see when and where each test is being taken. To make it easier for the user, the SSI-20/35™ Series Ignition Interlock does not have a hum feature, meaning users only have to blow into the device without needing to hum.

The Smart Start Canada device is a small, discreet handheld unit connected to your ignition with an LCD tri colored display and keypad. In select jurisdictions, the device can also be paired with an optional compact Photo ID camera (approximately one cubic inch) mounted on the driver’s side window to verify the identity of the person providing the breath sample. The Photo ID camera option is currently available only in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Quebec.
You provide a breath sample before starting the vehicle. If no alcohol is detected, the car starts normally. While driving, the device requests rolling retests at random intervals. If applicable a built-in camera verifies your identity, and all results are recorded for your monitoring authority.
Yes. Smart Start’s device is designed to be small and low-profile, with a compact handset and a Photo ID module about one cubic inch. It uses a no-hum feature, so you simply blow into it without humming, keeping tests quick and unobtrusive.
Warm-up is brief under normal conditions but takes longer in very cold weather. Disconnecting the handset and bringing it indoors during extreme cold reduces warm-up time and helps avoid technical issues, so your test is ready faster when you return to the vehicle.
